Royal Palace of Milan
|
The Royal Palace of Milan has ancient origins: it is born with the name of Palazzo del Broletto Vecchio and was the seat of the government of the city during the Middle Ages. In the eighteenth century, under the dominion of the Habsburg family, the Royal Palace is the place of sumptuous ceremonies and saw important artists and architects to work to transformations and restorations: the current shapes of the palace come from the neoclassical transformation of the years between 1771 and 1778.
Originally the palace had been planned with a system of two courtyards, then partially demolished in order to have space to built the Cathedral; the facade of the palace, following the outline of the ancient courtyard, forms a small square called Piazzetta Reale. It was seriously damaged, like many other monuments in Milan, during the bombings of 1943, but after a careful restoration it is today an important cultural center, seat of art exhibitions and cultural events.
